I noho a Toi te Huatahi i Whakatāne, i te takiwā e kīia nei ko Te Puku o te Wheke. I pā te mana o Toi ki ngā wāhi maha o Te Ika a Māui, waihoki ōna hononga ā-whakapapa, ā, e ai ki ngā kōrero i hokihoki anō a Toi ki Hawaiki.

Toi te Huatahi lived at Whakatāne, an area known as Te Puku o te Wheke. Toi’s influence and relationships extended to many other parts of Te Ika a Māui and he was said to have made frequent trips back to Hawaiki.
